If you ignore your blood cholesterol levels and never take into consideration your doctors advice regarding a change in a lifestyle orientated towards re-discovering your eating habits and exercising, then you will be faced with the possibility of taking cholesterol reducing drugs. Those who have dangerously high cholesterol levels will get a medical prescription to aid them in lowering them. The only problem is that the drugs are totally inefficient if you are still not willing to change your lifestyle. In addition to this, all cholesterol reducing drugs have nasty side effects, and some can even pose a serious threat to your general health.
Furthermore, recent studies show that one of the most used drugs for reducing blood cholesterol can lead to cancer. The specific substance contained in drugs like Inegy should be taken with great care. Although further health inspections and thorough research have been carried out to check for links to cancer, results are still inconclusive. Regardless, health officials said that they are not even sure if the drug works - as all cholesterol reducing drugs are just ways to speed up reactions to certain foods, and cannot reduce levels alone.

bypass (MIDCAB for short) surgeries and have been performed on patients with comparatively mild forms of heart disease. Minimally invasive heart valve surgeries have also been performed on patients whose conditions may be too unstable for conventional open-heart surgery. MIDCAB procedures may be performed with or without the heart-lung machine.

Minimally invasive procedures offer a number of advantages over conventional open-heart surgery. They are less traumatic and require smaller incisions. However, not all patients are candidates for minimally invasive procedures. For instance, a MIDCAB is typically reserved for cases in which only one or two grafts are required, and treatment is often limited to blockages in the left anterior descending coronary artery (LAD).
Catheter-based procedures, especially balloon angioplasty with or without stent placement, are also decreasing the number of open-heart surgeries necessary. During a balloon angioplasty, the physician guides a thin plastic tube through the circulatory system and into the coronary arteries. When the catheter has reached the site of a blockage, the balloon is rapidly inflated, crushing the arterial plaque against the wall and opening up the vessel. In many cases, a stent is also implanted. A stent is a tiny metal mesh that is permanently left in the artery. Stents have been shown to reduce the incidence of restenosis, or reclosure of the artery, the reducing the need for further procedures. Catheter-based procedures can also be effective in treating heart-valve disease and certain congenital heart diseases, such as an atrial septal defect. Like minimally invasive procedures, catheter-based procedures offer a treatment option with less trauma and pain for the patient. However, these procedures also carry certain risks.

Researchers in the States say that statins, the popular cholesterol-lowering drugs, may also lower blood pressure.
They say this possibly helps to explain why statins have been shown to prevent strokes as well as heart attacks.
The researchers from the University of California, in San Diego, say patients who were given two different types of statins had modest but rapid declines in both their top and bottom blood pressure readings.
According to Dr. Beatrice Golomb the author of the study, it is clear they make a consistent but modest improvement which may be especially important for explaining the stroke benefits of statins.
By lowering levels of low-density lipoprotein (LDL), the bad cholesterol which can clog up arteries and cause heart attacks, statins help prevent heart disease.
Dr. Golomb says though LDL cholesterol has never been consistently shown to be related to stroke, statins have been shown to lower stroke risk in many studies, whereas blood pressure, is a very powerful contributor to stroke and this may help explain some of the reduced risks of stroke.
Statins are currently the worlds top-selling drugs, and in addition to the cardiovascular effects, the drugs have been shown to have some unexpected benefits, such as lowering the risk of death from influenza, pneumonia and the effects of smoking.
Scientists suspect this may be because the drugs affect the amount of inflammation in the body.
Golomb says while other research which suggested statins improved blood pressure were intriguing there were no major, rigorously conducted trials showing this effect.
For the study Dr. Golomb and her team studied statins use and blood pressure in almost 1,000 people who were divided into three groups:-
One group were given the statin drug simvastatin (Zocor), another group were given pravastatin (Pravachol) and a third group were given a placebo.
Golomb says it took one month of treatment before the effect of both statins began to emerge.
She says the drugs reduced both systolic blood pressure and diastolic blood pressure by 2 to 3 millimeters of mercury compared with the placebo.
Golomb says though the size of the effect was modest, it was statistically very significant.
Six months, after people were taken off the drugs and checked again two months later, those benefits had disappeared.
High blood pressure typically produces no symptoms but can lead to serious health problems including stroke, heart failure, heart attack and kidney failure.
It can up to a point be controlled by lifestyle changes such as losing weight, exercising more, reducing salt intake, quitting smoking and by taking drugs.
The research is published in the Archives of Internal Medicine.

Preparation: Preparing patients for the group experience is absolutely crucial. Half an hour spent explaining what to expect and how the group operates can mean the difference between success and failure. I tell patients that group therapy will give them a chance to see others express all kinds of feelings-positive and negative-and will provide feedback and encouragement. Therapy helps fight the feeling of isolation, that the patient is battling alone.

Group therapy is a challenge. Patients may feel bewildered at times. Change takes time-longer, perhaps, than they may think. They may feel discouraged. The rewards, though, can be great. They will enjoy a rare opportunity to have their thoughts and feelings recognized and accepted by others. This in turn will lead to new feelings: trust, closeness, and the sense of emotional support.

Early sessions: Patients introduce themselves and describe their experiences. Soon they find things in common-friends, feelings, even symptoms. I encourage these links between people, but at the same time work to draw in other members who may feel different or left out. All patients should have a chance to speak during the session, and there should be time at the end to discuss their reactions to the group experience.

Usually a patient is surprised to hear that other people share her thoughts or feelings. She may be surprised to hear girls (who even she can see are emaciated) stating that they feel fat.

Hearing someone express self-hatred or disappointment can stir up similar feelings in another patient, making her painfully aware of emotions she didnt know she had. Thats the downside of getting in touch with your feelings-you may not like what you find. Patients may want to run away from this experience - and thus the group- to avoid dealing with it. But recognizing and talking about these feelings reduces their impact. I encourage patients to keep attending even if they are not yet able to express their feelings to the group.

A therapist in an eating disorder group, unlike the leaders of other types of groups, will usually encourage contact between members outside of the session. At the first meeting, patients exchange phone numbers; we encourage them to call each other as an alternative way of coping with their urge to binge or starve.

Later meetings: At first, patients may tend to direct their thoughts and feelings to the group leader. Eventually, though, patients speak more freely to each other. When that happens, the impact can be enormous. As one patient told me, I couldnt believe it-I gave someone in the group some advice and she actually took it! I really felt worthwhile for a change! For many patients, such an experience may be the first time that something she says is listened to and treated as being of value.

Though each group is different, common themes emerge. At first, talk of eating behavior may dominate the scene: ve forgotten how to eat, I dont know what to eat or how much, m afraid that if I start to eat again I wont know when to stop. As time passes, other themes appear: assertiveness, the fear of displeasing others, anger, isolation, emptiness, and hopelessness.

Eventually patients explore broader issues, such as family relationships or the role of women in society. The issues vary depending on the age and background of the patients. While younger patients generally deal with problems of sexual maturity and the frightening path to adulthood, older patients may be wrestling with unstable marriages, child-rearing problems, or career choices.

As group therapy progresses, so do other forms of treatment. For example, patients often use their individual sessions to discuss feelings that emerge during group.

Progress in group therapy means symptoms grow less severe. Patients report that they have gained weight, their physical strength has increased, and they feel less bothered by cold. Success reinforces their commitment to therapy and gives others hope and encouragement.

Termination: Bringing group therapy to an end can be tricky. Groups stop meeting for many reasons: They reach the cutoff point agreed to earlier; the therapist leaves; members drop out. Leaving the group can be a sad and difficult time for some patients.

For each patient, leaving the group is a mixed blessing. On the positive side, it means stepping into the future armed with self-awareness. On the downside, some patients leave before theyre really ready, or they leave to avoid digging any deeper into their disorder.

Terminating therapy is easier if the group has been open-that is, without a fixed time frame or membership roster. In an open group, patients leave only when they feel ready. Leaving is a decision they make for themselves, a step toward autonomy. An open structure might mean a member can return to the group if she finds she needs further support.

Problems: The biggest problem with group therapy is the high dropout rate. The same factors that cause patients to drop out of any therapy group also affect eating disorder patients. These factors, as identified by Dr. Irving Yalom, include denial, low motivation, feelings of inadequacy, social insecurity, and fear of other people.

There may be external factors as well. The patient may be afraid to ask permission to leave work to attend a session, or her school activities may conflict. Sometimes her reluctance relates to difficulties with assertiveness or excessive rigidity.

Competition is often a problem: Patients may vie with one another to see who can be thinnest in the group. Members need to confront such rivalry directly and work through the problem during group discussions. Also, in individual therapy the patient has the therapist all to herself. Not so in a group. Sometimes patients feel they must compete for the therapists time and attention. If they fail, they feel inadequate or worthless.

Yes he does, according to the interview article on April 2009 s Journal but not all time. He says s about what you do the majority of the time, and the majority of the time I eat really healthy.
His father died because of cardiac arrest when he was 26. His grandfather also died because of the cardiac arrest. He knows that his family has high cholesterol. Back then he used to think that he has to train hard, eating loads of chicken breasts to get protein; however, the more he educated himself, the more he realized that keeping your cholesterol level low is to have lots of fruit, vegetables, whole-grain rice and pasta and potatoes and whole food things.
He recently spoke to an Olympic athlete and she said, Fifteen years ago, they used to think your performance was 80 percent training, 20 percent nutrition. And now they reckon its 75 percent nutrition, 25 percent training.
This article is really inspiring for me. Eating healthy does much more than exercise harder and it does not have to be super strict about it.

If you have been diagnosed with high cholesterol levels then the first thing that will be prescribed is a change in diet and lifestyle. Sometimes due to hereditary factors lifestyle changes such as lowering an intake of saturated fat and increasing exercise are not effective in lowering cholesterol levels.
In such a case you would need to take a cholesterol lowering drug. There have been over the years many different types of drugs prescribed to lower cholesterol levels. At the moment the most popular types of cholesterol lowering drug are statins. Some statins that might be prescribed are simvastatin, atorvastatin, rosuvastatin.
Sometimes this type of cholesterol lowering drug may not be suitable, one side effect that is commonly reported is muscle pain. If you are suffering from muscle pain while taking this type of cholesterol lowering drug then you might want to explore other drugs that are used to lower cholesterol levels.
Ezetrol or ezetimibe is a cholesterol lowering drug that is often prescribed if statins are not effective or causing you to experience side effects. Another option when choosing a cholesterol lowering drug is to use fibrates, though this is an older treatment and works best when used in conjunction with more modern treatments.
Even when you start a cholesterol lowering drug there are other things you can do. Losing weight is helpful when you are trying to keep your cholesterol levels low. Giving up smoking will also help as high cholesterol levels are associated with an increased risk of heart disease and giving up smoking can lower that risk.
Alcohol consumption also plays a part when dealing with cholesterol levels. You can actually help increase the good cholesterol levels in your body by drinking moderately. Moderate consumption of alcohol can also help to counter the negative effects of bad cholesterol. Drinking too much will put pressure on your liver and complicate matters even further.

According to a new research report, there are two types of meat consumption that are getting us into health-related trouble: red meat and processed meat. Those who eat more of these appear to have a modestly increased risk of death from all causes and also from cancer or heart disease over a 10-year period.

This new report has been published in the March 23 issue of Archives of Internal Medicine, one of the JAMA/Archives journals. In contrast, a higher intake of white meat appeared to be associated with a slightly decreased risk for overall death and cancer death.

In what is a very large piece of biostatistics, Dr. Rashmi Sinha and colleagues at the National Cancer Institute, Rockville, Md., assessed the association between meat intake and risk of death among more than 500,000 individuals. All of them were part of the National Institutes of Health-AARP Diet and Health Study, which is ongoing. Participants were between 50 and 71 years old when the study began in 1995 and they provided demographic and food frequency information to estimate their intake of white, red and processed meats. They were then followed for 10 years.

Over the followup years, 47,976 men and 23,276 women died. Those men and women who ate the most red meat had a higher risk for overall death, as well as death from heart disease or death from cancer than the men and women who ate the least red meat.

The results for "white meat" were completely different; comparing the one-fifth of participants who ate the most white meat to the one-fifth who ate the least white meat, those with high white meat intake had a lower risk of death.

For overall mortality, 11 percent of deaths in men and 16 percent of deaths in women could be prevented if people decreased their red meat consumption," the authors wrote. The impact on cardiovascular disease mortality was an 11 percent decrease in men and a 21 percent decrease in women if the red meat consumption was decreased to the amount consumed by individuals in the first quintile. For women eating processed meat at the first quintile level, the decrease in cardiovascular disease mortality was approximately 20 percent.

There are several mechanisms by which meat may be associated with death, the authors note. Cancer-causing compounds are formed during high-temperature cooking of meat. Meat also is a major source of saturated fat, which has been associated with breast and colorectal cancer. In addition, lower meat intake has been linked to a reduction in risk factors for heart disease, including lower blood pressure and cholesterol levels.

Because there are health benefits to eating some red and white (although not processed) meats, the consensus is not for a complete shift to vegan or vegetarian diets, according to Dr. Barry Popkin (UNC Chapel Hill) who added in an editorial that, The need is for a major reduction in total meat intake, an even larger reduction in processed meat and other highly processed and salted animal source food products and a reduction in total saturated fat."

For the time being, the PDF (while available) of the original research article (quite a comprehensive piece) is linked to the headline of today's blog post. It may answer more of your questions.

What is Cholesterol?
Cholesterol is a wax-like substance that is present in the cell membranes of body tissues and is carried in the blood plasma. It is a sterol; a combination of alcohol and steroid and is also called atherosclerotic plaque. The body requires cholesterol in order to form and sustain cell membranes, help with the production of bile and aid the metabolism of fat soluble vitamins.
Over time, cholesterol builds up on the artery walls and this condition is known as atherosclerosis. Atherosclerosis was thought to be an affliction of the elderly until the 1950’s when American pathologists were sent to Korea by the Pentagon to study the bodies of servicemen who died during the conflict. They autopsied around 2000 soldiers and found that approximately 75% had waxy, yellow deposits on the walls of their arteries; a shocking statistic considering the average age of the soldiers was 21. Their findings astonished the scientific community as it highlighted the onset of heart disease in the very young.
LDL and HDL Cholesterol
There are two different types of cholesterol; low-density lipoproteins (LDL) and high-density lipoproteins (HDL). HDL is commonly known as ‘good’ cholesterol and LDL is recognised as ‘bad’ cholesterol. LDL has been markedly linked with heart disease, whereas HDL is thought to reduce the chance of a heart attack. It has been estimated that approximately 25% of Americans are at risk from heart disease due to atherosclerosis, and around 10% have such high levels that doctors are left no choice than to prescribe cholesterol reducing drugs.
Foods that Lower LDL Cholesterol
There are a number of foods which are believed to significantly lower LDL cholesterol. Fiber-rich foods are said to be particularly beneficial and will not only lower ‘bad’ cholesterol, but also help the bowel to function properly, lowering the risk of colon and bowel cancer. There are many other foods that can help the body fight back against these dangerous deposits.
Fiber-rich foods, particularly oat bran, barley and wheat bran. They can be eaten as a cereal for breakfast and sprinkled onto other foods. Pearl barley can be added to soups. Apples and pears also have considerable amounts of soluble fiber and should be enjoyed on a daily basis
Beans and pulses are high in fiber and low-fat. They also contain lecithin, a nutrient that lowers cholesterol. Try to incorporate kidney, fava, borlotti and other dried whole-foods into your diet; there are many different types of lentils and pulses that are delicious in soups and stews
Avocado contains prolific amounts of monounsaturated fat, which helps to reduce LDL cholesterol and has many other health benefits including anti-cancer properties
Raw carrots are rich in a fiber called pectin that is renowned for minimizing cholesterol. There are a number of fruits that also contain pectin, including; apples, citrus fruits, strawberries, raspberries and other red or black berries
Shitake mushrooms are widely used by the Japanese and include a compound called lentinan, which not only lowers cholesterol, but is also thought to be anti-cancerous and may help to boost the immune system
Garlic is a super food and is well known for its blood-thinning properties. It also contains a substance allicin which is thought to prevent the body retaining LDL cholesterol and research has shown that the equivalent of one clove per day can lessen ‘bad’ cholesterol by 10-15% in the majority of people
Root ginger has been used in Chinese medicine for centuries and has numerous health benefits. It can be added to stir-fry’s (using healthy sesame oil) and other vegetable dishes
Nuts are naturally high in omega-3 fatty acids and are known to significantly reduce blood cholesterol; walnuts, pecans, hazelnuts and almonds are especially beneficial
Sesame seeds are rich in phytosterols. These compounds are said to substantially lessen LDL cholesterol. Other foods containing phytosterols include; celery, lettuce, asparagus, spinach, tomatoes, ginger, squash and strawberries
Safflower, canola, soybean, and olive oil are monounsaturated and are an excellent source of omega-3 fatty acids. Research indicates that they can decrease atherosclerotic plaque by up to 15% when eaten regularly
Salmon, tuna, sardines and mackerel contain considerable amounts of omega-3 fatty acids, which have many health benefits and are essential for brain and eye function
Prunes are a wonderful source of antioxidants and fiber, which is known to reduce LDL cholesterol
Alfalfa sprouts contain a substance called saponin, which is thought to obstruct and inhibit the formation of atherosclerotic plaque in the arteries
If you have high cholesterol or a family tendency towards atherosclerosis it is best to avoid processed and prepared foods, fried food, food containing animal fats or animal products, high-fat dairy products and food containing either saturated fat or trans fats. Research has revealed the key to lowering LDL cholesterol is a healthy, balanced diet that incorporates plenty of soluble fiber and at least five portions of fruit or vegetables a day. This combined with regular cardiovascular exercise should help keep the heart healthy and provide numerous other health benefits as well.

You've probably seen it around in the supermarkets, on TV, or just heard about it from a friend. But it's certain that most of you have a really hard time riding in the heat.

Most individuals would rather ride in the summer than in other times of the year, and there are those who shy away from the heat and humidity that the summer months can bring. Hoodia gordonii is supposed to be one of the next big products in the weight loss industry, or is it? Hoodia claims to be able to curb your appetite by being able to mimic the effects that food has on your hypothalamus - therefore, making you feel full. Here are some tips for staying cool while you ride:

Timing
o Timing is the key to life and summer bike riding isn't any different. Hoodia has a special compound in it known as P57 that mimics the effects of glucose on the nerve cells in the brain therefore reducing appetite.

Hoodia gordonii is a plant resembling a cactus found in the Kalahari Desert in Africa. Consider planning your ride for a time of day when the sun is not beating down on you or your bike. The San Bushmen living within this desert have used Hoodia for thousands of years in order to prevent themselves from becoming hungry during long hunting expeditions. Typically, people who hate the heat and humidity can miss the majority of the sun by avoiding riding between 10 a.m. It has been anecdotally reported that they can curb their appetites for about a period of 24 hours by chewing on hoodia.

In sometime around the middle of 2004, the media began to delve into hoodia. and late afternoon.

Location
o Choose a path to go bicycling where it's cooler. It mostly started when a correspondent to CBS known as Lesley Stahl actually went to the Kalahari Desert to find an authentic version of this special plant. This is typically not the city streets or anyplace where there is a lot of traffic. According to the story on the CBS website, Stahl reports that "She had no after effects - no funny taste in her mouth, no queasy stomach, and no racing heart. The cars add to the heat and can make the air really awful to try to breathe in. She also wasn't hungry all day, even when she would normally have a pang around mealtime. You may want to choose a more rural route to ride your bike.

o This might actually mean that you transport your bike to the country before going for a ride. And, she also had no desire to eat or drink the entire day. Similarly, riding in higher altitudes, such as a mountainous region, can bring you some much needed cooler air for your bike ride.

Clothing
o While you might hate Lycra for fashion reasons, wearing honest-to-gosh bike clothes can be a lifesaver in the summer. 'I'd have to say it did work,' says Stahl."

In a paper titled "Increased ATP content/production in the hypothalamus may be a signal for energy-sensing of satiety: studies of the anorectic mechanism of a plant steroidal glycoside," the authors of the paper found that in the animals tested, injected P57 (the active compound in hoodia) reduced subsequent 24 hour food intake by about 40-60%.

In addition to this, at Phytopharm's website (Phytopharm is the original developer of the hoodia product) Phytopharm states, "In 2001 Phytopharm completed a double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical study in overweight, but otherwise healthy volunteers using an extract of Hoodia gordonii. Wearing clothes that actually wick moisture away from your body can help keep you dry and prevent you from drowning in sweat. The large doses of extract caused a statistically significant reduction in the average daily calorie intake. Now, do remember that the idea behind sweating is also to allow your body to cool. In addition, a statistically significant reduction in body fat content was also observed compared to the placebo group after two weeks."

So, it's quite clear that from the fact that the San Bushman have been using Hoodia for centuries, an anecdotal report from Lesley Stahl that says that hoodia curbed her appetite, a scientifically controlled study done with P57 in animals, and a statement form Phytopharm that hoodia really does work to reduce appetite.

However, another problem arises: The authenticity of hoodia. So, leave the sweat on your arms, legs and face for as long as is safe. Since hoodia is very rare - the only known place to get the correct species of the plant is in the Kalahari Desert - and is in high demand, sellers are coming up with sneaky ways to trick customers into thinking that they actually get hoodia. Use the back of your gloves to clear your eyes if need be. The problem is it is quite difficult to tell who is selling genuine hoodia. But moisture in your groin area is a great way to add some saddle sore to your ride.

Hydration
o Staying well hydrated is key to a safe and pleasant riding experience in the heat. Although a CITES certificate is required for a seller to sell hoodia, this does not mean that their hoodia is authentic. Have several water bottles filled with cold water, or even ice only, depending on the length of the ride. Mike Adams at newstarget.com believes that up to 80% of hoodia sold is counterfeit. You will also want to know where you can replenish this water should you need to do so while riding. In addition to that, he notes that many sellers can photoshop a competitor's CITES, simply counterfeit a CITES, or send in a real batch of hoodia in order to get an authentic CITES and then sell customers fake hoodia. Never pass up an opportunity to refill empty bottles, particularly in the summer. You can get more information about the authenticity of hoodia by going to newstarget.com and doing a search for "hoodia".

Well now, it's fine and dandy that hoodia, assuming you find an authentic product, can reduce your appetite, but is that really that helpful? Among the people informed about weight loss (we actually call it "fat loss," not "weight loss"), it's known that simply starving yourself won't accomplish your goals, which is what hoodia would do. Staying hydrated will not only keep you cool but will keep your body performing at peak power and efficiency.

o Also pay attention to preventing dehydration and knowing the signs and symptoms. You must increase your calorie expenditure by doing some sort of aerobics in addition to increasing your muscle mass by incorporating weight lifting to actually achieve your goals and keep them. Dehydration can occur in as little as thirty minutes of exercise, particularly in the heat. Hoodia may be slightly useful in causing an additional calorie deficit since about half of the calorie deficit you obtain should be through decreased calories and the other half through increased physical activity. This is one of the symptoms of heat exhaustion, which causes an average of 452 deaths in the U.S. Nonetheless, you can easily control your appetite by drinking water or eating foods with a high satiety and a low amount of calories. annually. A stomach full of Jello has less calories than a stomach full of peanut butter. Those numbers rise during heat waves.

o Signs of Dehydration:
Dizziness and light-headedness
Nausea and headaches
Muscle cramps
Increase in body temp (which can lead to heat exhaustion)

Here are other tips to avoiding dehydration:
- Drink beyond your thirst.

Extra weight gain occurs because of the need of some people to eat large amounts of foods
The type of foods we eat and their nutritional value are very important. Consuming low nutritional value foods will not satisfy your hunger nor will those foods supply the energy you need.
Human nature dictates that we will eat until our hunger has been satisfied and since we have been left feeling hungry, we will eat more food.
Excessive weight gain is brought on by eating foods that dont meet your nutritional requirements. Eating the right foods, will satisfy your nutritional needs thereby reducing your need to eat more and that will ensure that you wouldnt gain excess weight.
You can understand now why fast foods are responsible for the high incidence of weight problems due to the simple fact that they arent delivering the essential nutrients that the body needs.
We can maintain a good bodyweight without being hungry by simply avoiding foods with low nutritional value and replacing them with foods that are high in essential nutrients.
Being hungry should not be part of a well-balanced lifestyle but most diets are too hard to maintain for any amount of time.
Your hunger can be satisfied and a healthy bodyweight can be maintained by eating nutritional foods in reasonable amounts.

Lowering Cholesterol by Reducing Stress
By Expert Author: Tim Lazaro

Stress has become a part of our daily lives. Many of us are in a rush to get to work and when we are there we are pushed to meet quotas and/or goals. We want a raise in salary and we undergo more stress. Life for us has become stressful.

The risk factors for heart disease are: Age (risk increases with age), Family history (if your parents suffer with heart disease you probably will also), Smoking (a definite killer, High blood pressure, Being overweight, Physical Inactivity, and Diabetes.

It always strikes me as strange that stress is not classified as one of the heart-disease risk factors. Many heart doctors point out that stress can trigger a heart attack. If one undergoes an emotionally traumatic event, and that person has plaque buildup in his or her arteries, part of that plaque may break free and cause a clog resulting in the death of heart muscle and a consequent heart attack.

So how we deal with stress is important. Many people use physical exercise to alleviate stress. Thirty minutes or more a day of good, heart-beating aerobic activity for five or more days a week will strengthen the heart and the circulatory system. Remember to check with your doctor first before starting an exercise program.

Regular and continuous exercise will lower the effects of at least two risk factors such as being overweight and high blood cholesterol. The more calories you will burn as a result of exercising will reduce your weight. And exercise has been shown to raise HDL good cholesterol levels and thereby lower total cholesterol.

Meditation by itself or in conjunction with physical exercise has been shown to reduce stress. There are many books that can teach you how to meditate properly and reduce the stress of everyday living.

Good personal relationships help to reduce stress. The support one draws from having good relationships cannot be overestimated. Voicing and sharing stressful problems with others can be mentally helpful. Keeping it all bottled up inside will only feed the beast. It has been stated that developing strong personal ties reduces the chances of developing heart disease. Opening up and expressing ones feelings to a trusted friend will do a lot to defuse the stress bomb that may be growing inside of you.

Other things to do to manage stress:

Keep a positive attitude - negativity only leads to more depressing feelings. Warm fuzzy feelings are good for you - try to generate them.

Praise yourself - accentuate the positive things, the successful things you do. Get high on these successes and stay there for days.

Accept what you cannot change. You can't fight city hall as the saying goes. Banging ones head against a stone wall does no one any good. Find a positive way of dealing with the situation. Perhaps finding a new job would be better for you.

Practice relaxation skills. Laugh as much as you can. For periods of time every day, push aside stress and just relax. Talk and think of other things. It's a big world with many wonderful things going on.

If you harbor hostility, find help. Hostility feeds stress, makes it worse helps it to achieve higher, world-record, explosive levels. Curmudgeons are just walking time bombs. If a person is so angry that he or she is always ready to fight, just imagine how high that person's blood pressure must be - all the time. Seek help to dissolve hostile feelings.

Stress can be managed. It only takes a positive approach to dealing with it. The result will be a lowering of your cholesterol.

Depending upon the type and stage of cancer, as well as the treatment protocol, an appropriate exercise prescription should be seen as an important part of the treatment strategy.* This article will address several of the physical and psychological benefits of exercise and will assist cancer patients resume their daily living activities and a sense of normalcy. In addition, an increased level of fitness will allow those going through the cancer experience to tolerate treatments more effectively with a greater adherence to the treatment schedule and possibly better results.
Physical Benefits
Aerobic Capacity
Aerobic activities utilize major muscle groups, are rhythmic in nature and are slow enough to allow the heart and lungs to supply oxygen to the exercising muscles. They may be done as part of a warmup or lead in to other activities or more as a stand alone activity. As part of a warm-up, some form of aerobic activity should be done prior to flexibility and resistance exercises. Examples include walking, cycling and swimming. The use of aerobic exercises approximately 20-30 minutes a day, several times a week have been shown to minimize the effects of fatigue, nausea and depression for many cancer patients. The increased circulation will also assist in the removal of waste products due to the effects of chemotherapy or radiation.
Balance
Balance exercises may improve balance that may be due to a loss of muscle mass or neurological damage such as neuropathy.
Bone Density
Moderate weight bearing exercise such as walking or lifting weights will minimize the loss of bone density that may result from metastasis to the bones or from the use of hormone therapy such as estrogen therapy for prostate cancer or tamoxifen for breast cancer.
Fatigue
Fatigue or what is known as cancer related fatigue (CRF) is very common occurence during the treatment and post treatment phase. A spiralling effect often occurs whereby an individual becomes less physically active and deconditioned. The individual therefore loses strength and does less. Aerobic and resistance exercises have been shown to intervene in this cycle with less fatigue on the part of the patient.
Flexibility
Flexibility is often lost as a result of scarring of the connective tissue or skin related to surgery or radiation, as well as the shortening of muscles due to inactivity. Stretching prior to exercise such as after a warm shower or a daily walk is suggested. Stretching at the end of an exercise session is also an ideal time as muscles have been warmed up and are more pliable. Stretch slowly not using too much momentum or bouncing types of movement when stretching. Lifting weights slowly through a complete range of motion will often increase flexibility.
Strength
Many cancer patients lose strength simply due to a lack of use. This is common in breast cancer where patients are afraid to lift objects with an affected arm. Moderate strength or resistance training will assist in maintaining strength which is essential in performing daily activities such as carrying groceries or raking the leaves.
Weight Management
Some cancer patients gain weight due to inactivity and hormone treatment. Those with advanced cancer often experience severe weight loss or cachexia due to the loss of fat and muscle. Aerobic activities will assist in the management of weight gain while light resistance exercise will maintain some degree of muscle mass for those experiencing cachexia. Exercise may also stimulate one’s appetite which is often lost during chemotherapy.
Increased Tolerance of Treatment
While exercise will, unfortunately, not cure cancer its therapeutic effects will often allow for a greater tolerance of treatment. Greater adherence to one’s treatment regimen may, in turn, increase the likelihood of recovery. A common mistake for those undergoing treatment is waiting to feel better before beginning to exercise or stated differently, “waiting to get better, to get better” thereby delaying the recovery process and a return to their former self
Psychological Benefits
Anxiety
Whether due to a “time-out” effect, biochemical changes or the increased body temperature of exercise exerting a calming effect, many symptoms of anxiety such as muscle tension or sleeplessness can be reduced or managed by moderate aerobic activity or by the slow meditative movements of the Eastern traditions such as Tai Chi.
Control
Loss of control and identity is commonly associated with cancer diagnosis. Many of the physical benefits of exercise enable one to perform activities of daily living (ADL) and gain a greater sense of control and identity.
Depression
Whether biochemical in nature or by gaining a measure of control, exercise has been shown to reduce depression that is commonly associated with cancer.
Support
For many, exercise classes may become an informal support group. Indeed, it may be said that exercise classes are often support groups for those who dislike traditional support groups. They may also provide needed structure and interaction for those who are not working and feel a sense of isolation.
Appropriate exercise should not be seen as something that is done only when you feel better or waiting to get better to get better. Rather, you will feel better once you become active once more.
* Please contact your physician before any beginning an exercise program.

Lets look at the effects and possible complications of obesity:
Obesity increases the risk of developing disease. Possible complications include:
• Heart disease
• High blood pressure
• Cancer
• Diabetes
• Gallbladder disease
• Breathing problems
• Bloating and stomach upsets
• Varicose veins
• Severe psychological problems
In fact, according to some studies, almost 70 percent of heart disease cases in the United States are linked to excess body fat, and obese people are more than twice as likely to develop high blood pressure.
Obese women are at nearly twice the risk for developing breast cancer, and all obese people have an estimated 42 percent higher chance of developing colon cancer.
Almost 80 percent of patients with Type 2, or non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus are obese.
The risk of medical complications, particularly heart disease, increases when body fat is distributed around the waist, especially in the abdomen. This type of upper body fat distribution is more common in men than in women.
The social and psychological problems experienced by obese people are also challenging. Discrimination for people is most likely to occur in educational institutions, employment, and social relationships.
Other psychological effects include stress, nervous tension, boredom, frustration, lack of friends, depression, inferiority complex, and poor self-esteem.
Here are some action steps to take.
1. The Proper Plan
Before taking actions in any problem we encounter, there should always be a plan first..
Beginning a task without planning is like building a house without a blueprint or fighting against a basketball team without a team play with your teammates. How can you expect a good outcome?
Losing weight is not at all different from any other situation. It also involves taking action based on proper plans built on good information. The better your plan, the more solid the information it is based on, the more satisfying your result.
2. Setting a Goal
Okay, so your weight is 20% above the considered normal for your height. You tend to eat more than 5 regular meals a day. Youre certain that youre physically unfit. Now, the question is, what do you want to happen?
Setting a goal is the first step in planning. Know what you want to accomplish. This way, the road you are taking is clear. You can keep track of your journey - whether or not you are heading in the right direction. With a goal in mind, you are always motivated to finish a task, or in some cases, to start doing it.
3. Be Definite
Setting a specific goal, when planning to lose weight, improves your chances of success.
Be clear and definite with what you want happen.
Vague aims such as ‘Id like to be healthier or ‘I need to lose a few kilos, tend to produce half-hearted efforts and poor results.
Instead, state your goal distinctly: ‘I want to lose 2-3 kilos this week and every week or ‘I will trim my waist line from 40 down to 32 by the end of the month.
If you need to, write it down and put it where you will always see and read it. This way, youll always be reminded of what you want and need to accomplish by the end of the month, the week, or even the day.
4. Be Realistic
In establishing a definite goal, make sure that it is possible and doable - realistic, in simpler terms.
How can a goal like ‘Ill lose 15 lbs in just a week happen if even the most accurate weight-loss diet suggests that you can only burn 6-7 lbs in a week?
Goals need to be sensible so that they can be achieved.
When you set an unrealistic goal, youre setting yourself up for disappointment. Many people give up on their goals because they fail to base their plans on the correct information.
5. Strategizing
After deciding on your goal, the next step is planning how to accomplish it.
Planning involves proper scheduling of activities throughout the whole day for a certain period of time.
These include exercises, meals, and rest.
It also includes the time these activities should be done, the duration, and in the case of eating meals, the food to be consumed.
This way, inappropriate spur-of-the-moments decisions can be avoided.
A proper and effective plan consists of quality time for performing such activities. Give yourself enough time to meet your goals. For example, sleep should be scheduled to last for around 8 hours a day so that youll be able to get enough rest. Lack of sleep may cause improper eating habit the next day.
Again, plans should be realistic. Include only time and activities you know you can accomplish for a given period of time.
After preparing the plan, write it down since you cant always keep the many details in mind. Post it in a place where you can always see and read it to remind you what your plans are for the day.
Try your best not to skip anything in your scheduled plan. Work on making it happen.
6. Change your mind, change your life
The first step to change is in your mind. Once you can activate a positive intention, the process of change begins. If you really want something to happen, you have to say to it. Then, and only then, can you see and experience ways in which you can shift your reality.
