We went to Chocolate World on the 3rd. Totally rocked, but how could it not--it is a world of chocolate, right?

We had a great dinner at a locally-owned restaurant (hate chain restaurant eating on road trips...I wanna see what the locals eat). It was beyond yummeh.

We stopped by an outlet mall and picked up some great 70% off outlets store liquidation sale stuff. Who couldn't like that? Nothing like a $150 bag reduced to $20, right?

We get to the super seekrit haunted BB. We were having a great time hanging out, joking around, what's not to like.

I went across the hall to get ice and for just a moment I thought perhaps ZZ Top was staying in this quaint little place and they'd brought the live bull they used to bring on stage in with them because that's what it sounded like was charging down the stairs toward our room. I peek out of the ice room, and there is no bull. Instead it's one really angry chick stomping toward her room in a outfit I believe she stole from Stevie Nicks from the photo shoot for the "Rumours" album cover. Following close behind Stevie was a dude decked in wedding groomsman/usher finery who appeared to be sane and sober from what I could tell.

He followed Stevie-dress-alike into the room next door to ours, and the screaming began.

From what we could hear, he wanted to drink beer and do wedding party duties at the reception, and she wanted him to drop everything and dance with her. She felt he was a bastard, an asshole, a selfish drunk (who honestly appeared sober), and a motherfucker who ruined everything for her. Fuck Bridezilla. She was Wedding Guestzilla. You know, that special brand of crazy chick who ruins any wedding her boyfriend is in but she is not.

Oh, dear God, the screaming and the crying and the wailing went on and on. There could've been ten ghosts in our room and we'd never catch a single EVP for Guestzilla making sure that her man didn't enjoy a second of anything that didn't involve kissing her ass.

Of course, all five of us are lined up along our wall with glasses to our ears like Granny Clampett or summin because we couldn't quite make out every word and this shit was better than TruTV or VH-1 reality put together.

Then we heard a crowd of laughing partying dudes (and one chick inexplicably wearing nothing but a while towel) start banging on Guestzilla's door while yelling, "Bobby, Lisa, are you in there?" It was the only moment of silence from Guestzilla's room.

Then, I went for a soda as the guys and the towel girl were loading up a humongo cooler (like if you could only have one cooler for the entire crowd at Woodstock, this would be the one to have full of cheap-assed beer with house. Towel Girl is yelling (for no reason at all...perhaps she teaches in a school for the hard of hearing) that she doesn't care what time the pool closed because it's time to take the cooler and the boys for a drunken swim.

As soon as they left for the drunken swim, I called the front desk and ratted them out like the angry bitch I am: "Just thought you'd like to know you have a group of drunks heading for the pool with a cooler loaded with beer."

The person in reception (flipper-free, I might add) thanked me and said, "I'm heading out there to bust them right now," like she's on Law Order or something. So, the party moves back inside. They were right above Sis and Lil' Safire's room partying all night long...or training elephants to dance using some type of slur commands. We know no which for sure, but I'm going to bet it was the first one. Every now and again, some of them would run down the stairs to our floor, open the door to the floor, and just scream down the hall, "Bobby! C'mom, Bobby! Bobby, Bobby, Bobby!" Then they'd run back upstairs and a whole new screamfest with an extra large dollop of pity party on the side would erupt from Lisa, the Guestzilla.

Then, things quietened down and we got some sleep. Sis and Lil' Safire were not so lucky because there was a party going on above their heads. At least they stopped yelling for Bobby to join them after a while.

In the morning, Bobby was wandering the halls bleary-eyed and confused asking everyone if they had any idea what happened to Lisa. As we check out of that room to stay in another room in the same place for tonight, I recounted the tale of Bobby and Lisa and the wedding party that included a girl wearing nothing but a towel. The receptionist said they'd had to run Towel Girl and her gaggle of guys away from the pool four or five times at all hours of the night.

So, I warned them that Lisa the Guestzilla had apparently gone missing during the night, so if they had a body turn up in the cornfields around here to please bear Bobby and Lisa in mind because she either left him during the night or he was creating his cover story in the morning.

Then off we went to the Land of the Little Horses. That was great as always (in the most wonderfully tacky way...love love love that place), but the camel is now gone. When I asked where the camel was, they said they "traded him to a zoo for some cows"! Jesus, what a pathetic excuse for camel-trading, huh? Guess he undid one bra too many. Damn that. Tomorrow, more on that and the joys of Amish Country and the commodification of Christ. Ferreal. If you want to buy some Christ-y products, this is your dream destination!

Seriously. There's a place called Dancing Waters. I was all excited thinking we'd found the Bellagio Fountains of the Amish World. Nope. It's a church that I guess has some kind of assembly line carwash way of baptizing by the score.

Really, you haven't lived until you've seen the Amish pulling their horsedrawn carriage up to the cash machine at the bank. WTF? Oh, and the BB turns out to be more like a Bed and your choice of toast or a cold mass-produced danish. Wheee. I'm living large. With entertainment like this, who needs a fucking ghost.

A day to remember the thousands who lost their lives on the beaches of northern (Normandy) France, to begin the end of the Nazi's European dominance of terror, and to end WW II. To be sure, it should never be forgotten, especially since many in the World and in the United States claim that the holocaust never happened. Poland was invade and the Nazi's started their murder machine. England suffered the first rocket bombings in the World's History. France fell to the Nazi's. China and much of the Pacific Islands were raped by Japan. The human extermination camps were working at full speed. Finally in December of 1941, Japan attacked the United States naval fleet in Perl Harbor, Hawaii, and the war came to America.

At that time we were a weak military country, but within 18 months we were pouring out planes, tanks, artillery, etc., and fighting both Germany and Japan. By the end of the war we would not only be the super power of the World, but with our super atomic weapons, change the World forever. Peace through strength, had proven its certainty. The death and carnage of the war, was unbelievable. Tens of millions around the World had died an awful death. Almost 500,000 Americans lost their lives. Over 10 million Americans were called to serve.

WW II had started less than 20 years after the end of WW I (the war to end all wars). Another foreign war that could not have been won without the help of America.

It is not an overstatement, or bragging to say that America has truly saved the World from oppression. We have proven that military strength is the sure way to secure freedom. For those of you who believe that violence solves nothing, History is not on your side.

Is there such thing as a good war? NO.
Are there times when we must fight, kill, and die? Yes.

That does not condone the misuse of our power, or the mistaken idea that all people of the World must live by our ideology. We, the people of America, are responsible when our government chooses to send our young people to fight and die. We have made mistakes, and people have died because of our mistakes. Yet, there is no denying that America is the shinning light of freedom throughout the World.

That position demands that we act responsibly. There can be no wars of opportunity, only wars of moral destiny. We need leaders with humanity. We don't need leaders to tell us what our individual morals should be, or that the World must all have the same morals. We need leaders who act on our behalf, with morality.

I believe the title of this post adequately conveys my thesis herein, but allow me to restate it a bit more completely:

When and where it becomes technologically feasible and acceptably safe according to the same standards used to judge similar technologies, it is morally necessary for a society which desires to respect human rights and human equality to allow and make available the means for human physical and mental enhancement; drawing an entirely artificial and inconsistent line between "treatment" and enhancement is not ethical, as it is claimed to be, but instead serves only to damn those who were less fortunate in the lottery of genetics and rearing to being forever trapped in their native and functionally inferior states.

I realize that this may not sound like something particularly controversial, especially not phrased in such an overblown, highfalutin manner, and I think that the only person who might take issue at this stage is a sort of conservative-minded medical professional or medical researcher. Medical ethics seems to be the primary vector for discussion of this matter so far, but I assure you that it's much further-reaching and much less abstract than that makes it appear.

I'd also like to admit up front that I have been beaten to the punch on addressing this issue by the preeminent journal Science, which ran an editorial several weeks ago recognizing the increasing demand for enhancement and recommending that the scientific and medical communities take up the issue realistically. It was not an endorsement, but it was an admission of, ultimately, the inevitability of human demand for enhancement and the need to understand it and perform it as reliably and ethically as possible. I take the matter in a different direction, though I agree with the editorial's thrust.

What am I talking about? Well, for starters, I'm talking about athletes using steroids and other performance-enhancing drugs. I'm talking about students and researchers using Adderall and similar stimulants to improve academic performance. I'm even talking about recreational use of Viagra and related sexually active pharmaceuticals. I'm also talking about technologies that haven't arrived yet but promise to in the near or not-so-near future: prosthetic body parts with electronic components whose functionality exceeds baseline organic analogs; implanted computing; real mental enhancement by drugs or surgery, as contrasted to today's attention-enhancing stimulants; and who knows what else, since the progress of future technology always contains unexpected developments.

Many of these familiar examples highlight the complexity contained within the qualifier "acceptably safe according to the same standards used to judge similar technologies." Athletic performance-enhancing drugs can have catastrophic consequences if misused, leading to heart failure, higher incidences of cancer, or other unfortunate medical outcomes. The mental enhancement drugs available today often suffer from similarly grim side-effects; abuse of Adderall, now widespread and deeply entrenched on university campuses, can have a variety of attached problems including psychosis, immune degredation due to sleep deprivation, and even death in extreme cases. By and large these drugs are the extent of enhancement available to most of us today; the more "cybernetic" methods that might come to mind like robotic limbs are prohibitively expensive, too primitive to be beneficial, or illegal - sometimes all three.

You'll note, however, that those list of horrible harms were attached to the word "abuse." This was part of the thrust of the Science editorial and it's part of my point as well (though it's not a point that I think is likely to strike home in a nation which hosts a continuing and deeply nonsensical War on Drugs) - that if these things are going to exist and be widespread anyway, it is then our duty to make them as safe and as fair as possible.

Frankly, though, what we have now is only the barest, primitive leading edge of what may come as we continue to advance our technology. The tradeoff of side effects versus benefits of the drugs many people use makes it entirely debatable whether they're enhancement at all for any but a few in special situations; a major-league baseball player may benefit from steroid use, but anyone else would likely suffer more harm than the positive returns would rationally justify. Adderall may help desperate students study for an exam, but its tendency to make users jittery and sometimes panicky makes its routine use unpleasant and potentially dangerous for most people. Other drugs used for similar purposes have similar problems. We don't yet seem to have anything that qualifies as a clear "upgrade."

But we will. We will, and under certain circumstances we already do.

Consider the case of a victim of a hereditary degenerative disease - Huntington's chorea, for no particular reason. This person will not live the fullest and best possible life for someone in his societal situation. This person will suffer, and die early. We consider this person deserving of any available medical means to treat this disorder. But Huntington's is not a disease, per se; it's a genetic condition. This person is only living out the life determined by his genes. He's not suffering from any external negative influence, nor is he responsible for his condition as a result of his own actions. We consider this unfortunate, and we deem this person worthy of elevation by any available means to a better life than that predetermined by genes and circumstance.

Consider the case of a perfectly ordinary young man of average abilities who finds himself unable to grasp the subtleties of quantum physics at university. It is his dream to understand and work with the fundamental forces of the universe, and to use his knowledge to find new energy sources and new technologies, but he simply can't make the math line up in his head. He is using the brain his genes created for him and the training his parents and other influences gave him. He is living out the life - and the inadequacy - predetermined by his genes and circumstances. He faces an uphill struggle to comprehend the difficult problems facing him and a hopeles academic and professional disadvantage if he pursues his dream. Does this young man deserve the opportunity to obtain and use whatever drugs are available to focus and sharpen his mind and aid him in his studies? His case is qualitatively analogous to the victim of a genetic disease, and yet by and large our society frowns on his availing himself of any means of self-improvement other than hard work, which we like to imagine is all that is necessary - a fairy-tale view of morality, reward, and punishment which reality often fails to bear out.

Think of all the other conditions of life which we, today, vacillate about whether to treat as disorders or unfortunate but unalterable qualities of an individual: depression, anxiety, irritability, addictiveness, lethargy, physical weakness, poor memory, chronic pain, and a host more. Do we deserve to be damned with these small failings just because we were born with them? It is not the sufferer's fault if he is clinically depressed. It is similarly not the sufferer's fault if he is unintelligent, or if he is intelligent but unable to focus. Free will - if you accept its reality, which I do only provisionally - extends to our decisions, but not our basic natures. If anyone is to blame for a tendency to alcoholism or a small frame or arthritis, it is one's parents, and yet assigning blame helps us not at all.

I say, therefore and finally, that as we have the means, we must, if we would claim to be just and moral as a society, allow all individuals the means to make themselves the best they may be, to succeed as greatly as they may succeed. To do any less is to chain them to a primitive genetic determinism, is to enslave them - us! - to a place in life determined not by individual rights, nor even by merit, but merely by birth. We had as well return to the days of feudal aristocracy. No, it will not do. Making human enhancement available is a moral imperative.
