Hey there, all you pet lovers out in cyberspace! While pet "pawrents" are keenly aware about the health benefits received from sharing our homes and hearts with pets, the University of Minnesota Stroke Research Center has been doing a bang up job to scientifically prove what has been heretofore mostly anecdotal in nature. Interestingly, what they are learning is the feline species may be even more helpful in health benefits than their canine counterparts.
There has been a lot of evidence already demonstrated that owning a dog can promote better health by decreasing blood pressure, and giving a boost to the chemical balance in our brains which help us derive pleasure in that special relationship between dog and human.

Gregor Mendel, it didn't work. Personally, I have always wondered why anyone would breed an inferior dog at all, even if you could "blend" your way out of it. Why not find the best dog you can find and breed it to the best dog you can find and get an even better dog? Or, as the saying goes; "breed the best to the best and hope for the best."

I had a lady bring an AKC registered German Shepherd to me for an instinct test. According to her, this dog had everything he needed to be a champion, except temperament. He was shy, timid and anxious. In the show ring, he was only able to fake it and exhibit "the look of eagles" for about half as long as needed to win. When panic set in and his true nature reappeared, his head drooped, his ears flattened and his stride shortened. I only half expected her to tell me no when I asked whether she would breed this dog, but was utterly dissappointed to hear her tell me adamantly, "absolutely." Her reasoning was that she had bitches in her kennel that would easily cover up his withering temperament with their boldness, and his tremendous coloring, conformation and movement were just too good to pass up. What she didn't know is that Mr. Mendel's work had proved her wrong 150 years ago.

Mr. Dathe closes in his article by suggesting that we should not breed to mask our dog's faults, not try to "blend" them away, but breed dogs to enhance their strong points. Then he gives some very good advice when he says; "consider it.

Dog health~ Celebrating July 4th BTFD (Before The Family Dogs)

Ah, the Fourth of July, the gathering of family and friends, the barbeque's, people blowing off their finger tips with illegal bottle rockets, the town fireworks display, and the drinks! Those were the days of fun and relaxation, the days before the family dogs came to live with us! Did you ever notice it only takes one dog to act like a complete lunatic to set off the whole pack? Theres not enough Prozac in the world for them or me on July 4TH!

BTFD I used to love the fourth of July, wed bring our visiting New York family to Shamokin, or shmokin as we New Yorkers call it, a place that has no money for town revitalization, but boy can they put on a grand pyrotechnics display! Wed park on the street, put on our 3D glasses, strap on a thermos of drinks, and open a bag of snacks. The moon roof would glide open, the seats would recline and we were ready to watch the show. Pure delectable pleasure! Ah yes, those were the days!

At present, beginning on June 1st and up to July 4th (as well as sometime there after) is a total nightmare! Seemingly fireworks can be set off at any time in the neighborhood without warning and clearly by neighbors that are not dog owners, or if they are, then they sedate them heavily before they begin! It only takes one pyrotechnics blast in the neighborhood for my brood to be set off for a continuous two hour barkfest. Once they hear the snap, crackle, pop, and sizzle of a firecracker I know its going to be a long, long, night.

Its about this time of year that I wish I had gone to school to become a veterinarian because surely I would have seven medically loaded needles laid out neatly on the kitchen counter ready to knock them all out. Sweet dreams guys! But alas, when I was in school, unless you were a persistent person, the future for girls was geared to being a good secretary, a good housekeeper or a good cook and we all know where I fall in the cooking category! After my first day in culinary class when asked to touch raw meat, I said, "Adios Amigos!"

July 4Th could be somewhat bearable if there were a specific time frame that we could lall ive by, at least give us time to prepare for the upheaval, the time to tether the dogs so they are not jumping out the window, and the time to mentally prepare ourselves for what is about to come! How about starting the blasting after 9 pm and ending by 11 pm, especially on a weeknight. I'm thinking there must be some rule in place already, but if there is, it is not enforced. Lets face it, calling the cops on your neighbors, well, thats just not neighborly, and so we endure and just when we think its over, Boom, another goes off.

Enter Rescue Remedy the first big chatter among dog owners, an herb that was supposed to calm dogs from such anxieties. Rescue Remedy came in the form of drops to put in the water or in a spray to squirt on the tongue. I chose the spray since it was only the main instigator, Bentley, that I was trying to calm down at the time. The cost in an herbal store was a whopping $15.00 for a 0.35 oz bottle, but I was desperate. Armed with this in hand I couldnt wait for the next storm or fireworks blast cuz I was ready to spay Crazy Bentleys tongue with this miracle product!

Well, that didnt go so well, I was only able to get three out of the four recommended sprays on the tongue as Bentley paced back and forth in his usual neurotic state and it made no difference in him at all. Each time thereafter that I reached for the bottle just before a storm, Bentley got wise and my squirts started to end up on other parts of his body, like his ears, jowls, or eyes, which might explain why he started walking around like he was blind for a few days!

A couple years later along comes Melatonin, supposedly an over the counter wonder herbal delight to help dogs with thunderstorm phobia, fire works, and other anxieties.
Ah, could this be? A cure to the Fourth of July nightmare? A cure for Thunderstorm phobia?
I highly doubted it, but again, why not try it? So I got on line to Puritans Pride and as usual they had their 3 for 1 sale going on so I ordered 3 bottles and by the next week I was rolling in 360 tablets of Melatonin heaven!

With a storm on the horizon I quickly gave Bentley the recommended three pills (for his body weight) before leaving for work in the morning. Later that afternoon the storm hit and I again saw no difference in Bentleys neurotic behavior, however that does not mean it doesnt work because I have heard many testimonials to the contrary. I think Im just blessed with a crazy ole dog that only a dose of heroin will cure!
The melatonin is now used to help with hubby's insomnia!

So this July 4th you may want to invest in a small bottle if your dog is bothered by fireworks and if it doesnt work for your dog, you can always use it for insomnia!

Here is information on melatonin. Always speak to your vet before trying any over the counter medication.

This week was busy with a number of different things on the go. Were looking for a more permanent office space to establish Veterinarians Without Borders in Chile, so we met with the Director of Extension Services to discuss our role within the university and the community here in Valdivia. Our meeting was very positive and exciting, and will likely lead to something collaborative and long term in the future. Regarding an office spacewell well have to be patient while we all start investigating possibilities on and off campus.

It was also a big week in the wildlife department. There is a big project here with a multitude of undergraduate and post-graduate veterinary students working together to learn as much as possible about the pudu, for example: exposure to diseases acquired through contact with cattle and that are a risk to humans, reproductive characteristics, age and gender distribution, general health, intestinal parasites and response to a general anesthetic protocol. These students and the doctor of the wildlife rescue centre worked together to collect as much data as possible in the short time provided by the anesthetic. Everything went well, and all pudus recovered nicely from the anesthetic.

Do you have vaccine questions? I mean, these days, who doesnt? Just a few short years ago annual vaccinations were the very hallmark of the responsible pet owner, and now were hearing that vaccines last for three years, or seven, or the life of the pet even while many of our vets are insisting on continuing to give every vaccine every year.
Its not just veterinarians, either. Boarding kennels, groomers, training classes all have their own requirements and regulations, which typically follow the old-school recommendation that annual booster shots be given for common canine diseases.
Lets set aside the insanity of letting groomers, boarding kennel owners and dog trainers tell us how to treat our pets medically in the first place. Whats up with the vets? Why are some of them still clinging to those outdated and potentially harmful protocols, and what can we do about it?
We can start by educating ourselves about how vaccines work, how they fail, and what the consequences of unnecessary or inappropriate vaccination are. Its not true that vaccines t hurt they can.
Of course, who the hell am I to tell you that? Im railing against listening to groomers and dog trainers, and here I am, a pet blogger, doing the same thing. So dont listen to me.
Instead, listen to Dr. Ronald Schultz, one of the worlds leading canine vaccine researchers. He holds a PhD in Immunology and Veterinary Pathobiology, and established the first veterinary clinical immunology laboratory in the country while he was at Cornell.
Hes currently Chair of the Department of Pathobiological Sciences at the University of Wisconsin School of Veterinary Medicine in Madison and an honorary diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Microbiologists.
Hes also on the AAHA Canine Vaccine Task Force, the AAFP Feline Vaccine Task Force, and the Vaccine Guideline Group for the World Small Animal Veterinary Association.
He was the first president of the American Association of Veterinary Immunologists and has published more than 200 papers on the immunology and microbiology of animal disease, clinical immunology and vaccinology.

First of all, you must consider your destination. You may be very excited about it; but what about your dog? You will need to check to see if the location you are traveling to is dog friendly. If you will be staying at a hotel, you must call ahead of time and make sure that a dog would be welcome. Many hotels will not allow this. If you are staying with friends or family, do not surprise them by bringing along your pet. People may have allergies, young children may be afraid of dogs; therefore always check ahead.

The English Cocker Spaniel is one of the most distinctive looking members of the sporting group. With its long, flowing coat and soft, loving eyes, this dog is a true hunter at heart. Interestingly enough, the English Cocker Spaniel is said to retain much more of its hunting nature than the American version.
This dog also requires a bit more exercise than its American counterpart. If one was to describe the English Cocker Spaniel in just a few words, those words would be sensitive, happy, devoted, demonstrative, inquisitive, and protective.
A Brief History Of The English Cocker Spaniel
Considered to be one of the most specialized groups of dogs, the spaniel family is the largest numbers of dogs in a single group that we know of today. The English Cocker Spaniel is a land spaniel. During the 1800s, the larger spaniels were used for springing game and the smaller versions were used to hunt woodcock.
Both the smaller version and the larger-sized spaniels were basically two variations of the same dog breed. It wasnt until 1893 that the two sizes were officially considered to be separate breeds. The smaller version of the English Cocker Spaniel, which should weigh under twenty-five pounds, was designated the name Cocker Spaniel. And because both breeds share much of the same genetic makeup, they share much of the same hunting abilities and talents.

Your dog is getting in the garbage when you’re not home. Or maybe he’s peeing on the carpet when you walk out of the room.
Perhaps he’s shredding the toilet paper while you’re away, tearing down the window treatments or chewing on the couch.
You know that yelling at him hours later, when you get home and find the destruction, doesn’t work because you’re not actually catching him in action. Therefore, he can’t make the association between his action and a negative consequence.
So what are you supposed to do?
How do you punish a dog for something he does when you’re not around?
Get creative.
Before you read on, I’ll warn you — most people aren’t willing to put this much time and effort into correcting their dog’s behavior.
You may be one of them, but before you stop reading, think about this: It will take you less time and effort to properly correct a behavior then to spend the entire life of your dog coming home day after day to clean up after him.
When your dog is doing things when you’re not around, there’s only way to correct the problem: set him up.
Sensi had a bout of garbage digging for a while, and there are few other behaviors that are quite as disgusting and create such a wretched mess.
I wasn’t going to allow this to keep happening.
I armed myself with a glass jar full of pennies — a trick I learned from the guy in our office who has a service dog. Shake that jar while charging toward your dog and he’ll think the world is coming to an end.
Then I casually led Sensi into another room, and once he was out of sight, I set up the garbage can. I put a little barbecue sauce on edge of the bag to tantalize him, and hung a few pieces of cheese over the edge.
We let Sensi back in the living area and immediately started preparing to “leave.” We put our shoes on, grabbed our coats, I slung my purse over my shoulder and we gave Sensi our usual goodbye — a couple pats on the head while we said, “We’ll be back, be good boy.”
Brent and I left the house, but we didn’t really leave. While Brent tinkered in the garage, I stealthily hid myself outside the house in a place where I could see through the sliding glass door and watch my dog, but he couldn’t see me.
It took about 20 minutes, and believe me, my patience was wearing thin.
I watched Sensi as he laid down on the couch and thought I might be hiding in the bushes all night.
But in the end, his nose led him to the garbage can. Just as he began licking the barbecue sauce, I burst through the sliding glass door shaking my jar of pennies.
Sensi was so terrified and shocked. Panic stricken, he ran and actually hid in a closet — I’d never seen him do that before.
I had to coax him out of the closet and cuddle him until he stopped shaking. I felt bad, but the set up worked.
Sensi has never again touched the garbage can.
It’s up to you. Be creative, devote some time and test your patience, or just resign yourself to cleaning up garbage strewn across the floor for the rest of the years you spend with your dog.

I have just read a very interesting article that I just had to share with you.  I think most health conscious pet owners are aware that commercial pet food can cause all sorts of health problems in pets, including allergies that can be quite distressing to your pet if not dealt with.  But who would have thought that the food your pet eats can affect YOUR health?
Well, it can.  Read on
Can Pet Food Play a Role in Your Allergies, Too?
Are you or is someone you know allergic to your pet? Today in the US, up to 70% of households have a dog or cat and yet anywhere from 10-20% of the population has pet allergies. With numbers like that, chances are you or someone you know sneezes whenever theyre in your house. You may even have a friend or a family member who wont even come over because they are allergic to your beloved pet. Not to mention you probably know someone who LOVES pets and wants one of their own, but simply cannot tolerate living with one. Could there be a way to alleviate allergy symptoms without loading up on medications or limiting exposure to dogs and cats? The answer might be located in your pets food dish.

Lets begin by exploring what causes people to be allergic to dogs and cats in the first place. According to the American College of Allergy, Asthma, Immunologys website, allergies to animals are caused when certain proteins found in pet dander, saliva, and urine are identified by the bodys immune system as harmful substances which then produces anti-bodies to defend itself from the intruders. When these anti-bodies are produced, they create an inflammatory response in the nose, lungs or skin resulting in itchy eyes, sneezing, coughing, or hives. (Is your nose starting to itch just reading this?) Reactions to cats are more common than dogs, because cats groom themselves continually, spreading saliva on their fur, which in turn dries and flakes off into the air. Air-filtering and vacuuming may help some, but dander is a sticky substance that gets into any fibrous surface that it comes in contact with (including pet fur, which is why the fur itself is often mistakenly thought to cause allergies). This is why some people claim that some breeds that dont shed or have little or no hair, like Poodles, Terriers, or Basenjis, are . However, the dander is still there, though in lesser amounts, even on a hairless animal - still producing allergens that can cause symptoms.

We all know that diet plays an essential role in the treatment and prevention of allergies in pets. But an animals diet is also probably the single most important factor in preventing allergies in humans as well. Once fed an all-natural, high quality diet, the improvement in an animals coat, skin and saliva can make the problem proteins seem less threatening to an allergic persons immune system. The idea is that healthier skin is less flaky, thus significantly reducing the dander being spread and affecting the danders composition itself. In her book, The New Natural Cat, Anitra Frazier speaks to this very topic and even undergoes an experiment with a neighbor who wants a cat, but has never been able to spend more than a few seconds with one before he is absolutely miserable. After spending time with cats that were fed a natural diet, he adopted not one but two cats from her!

Unfortunately there has been no scientific research on this topic. But still there are many people out their with success stories to share and holistic vets who swear by the use of diet to control allergies in humans. I have my own compelling evidence in a story from a few years ago. I moved to a small studio apartment with two cats. One night I invited my cousin over to see my new digs. He told me he might be able to peek in but I should have my coat on and be ready to leave as he was severely allergic to cats. He ended up staying for three hours that evening, in a tiny space with two (raw-fed) cats - a previously impossible scenario! This little miracle blew us both away, and is all the research I needed personally to be completely convinced of the power of a raw, natural diet.

Many pets are living longer these days. Thats good news, but it also means cancer rates among pets are going up. Nearly half of all dogs get cancer at some point in their lives. Luckily, theres now a facility in Las Vegas where cutting edge medicine is being practiced to resolve the deadliest and most complicated veterinary challenges.
Its called the Veterinary Referral Center. Theres nothing else like it in the state. Its the place where other vets send their trickiest cases.
In every cage and every corner of the center, theres a story that will break your heart. Autumn is usually the orneriest of cats, but the cancer in her liver looks like it has spread to her bones, so shes less of a pistol than normal.
One dog sacked out on the floor is waiting to have his leg amputated so the tumor doesnt spread further.
Sad faces scared faces dogs and cats on their last legs and others on the mend, looking a bit embarrassed by their hospital garb.
Nearly every case that comes to Veterinarian Dave Mason is a referral from other vets in town. This is where the special cases are sent, the medical mysteries and lost causes, because the center is a cutting edge hospital facility.
s exactly the same looks the same same equipment, same anesthetic, basically the same protocols as well. We pretty much consider that we can do everything the human doctors can do, said Dr. Mason.
That means they have a CAT scan for cats and dogs, digital x-ray capabilities and an MRI machine made especially for animals. s actually one of only seven or eight in the country, said Mason.
A pooch on the operating table is getting some screws put in his neck to fix a birth defect that made it hard for him to walk. Just a couple of days after the surgery, he was up and moving around.
The oncology room is the only one of its kind in southern Nevada. For animals like Autumn, the odds are pretty long, but at a minimum, the staff knows how to make her final days as pain free as possible.
We can cure some of them, but for a lot of them its to buy more time, keep them comfortable and as good as can be for as long as possible, said Dr. Mason.
The center has its own blood bank too, and has its own blood drives so theres a supply on hand for dog and cat surgeries. Every day, gut-wrenching stories unfold but profound successes as well.
I havent had one day as a veterinarian that I wished I did something different. Most of the time, with peoples attraction to their animals and the way they are to them, most people leave here smiling, so I think weve done a really good job, said Mason.
One goal is to not even let the animals know theyre being treated for something therapy disguised as chasing a ball around the backyard.
Xandor is a very special patient a member of the Metro K9 Unit rehabbing a torn ACL. Over the next few months, Xandor will get to know Vet Tech Maria Shinas pretty well. The center is filled with shiny, high tech equipment, but it all boils down to caring people who got into the business because they love animals.
My mind never stops working. Like even this morning, Im thinking, ‘What do I have to do? said Shinas. s very satisfying. This is a job we work intimately with the owners. They are right here with us and we show them the exercises to do right here at home and we feel good about it.
As the glass tank fills with water, Xandor can barely contain his enthusiastic moans. Hes got a lockjaw grip of a green rubber kitty and seems to think this is a game, not therapy, even when the treadmill starts up.
When hes at work and out doing his thing, hes a totally different dog, said Xandors handler, Metro K9 Officer Rick Vorce.
And its his work that led Xandor to the center. He and Vorce are key members of the nationally ranked K9 unit, who often partner with Metros SWAT Team. Xander is a 10-year-old Belgian Malinois, a very serious hombre when hes on duty.
In the six years weve been together, hes found about 80 bad guys, anywhere from people whove committed murder, bank robbers, car thieves, burglars, said Vorce.
While in pursuit of stabbing suspect a few months ago, Xandor got a little carried away and tore his ACL. He decided to play wonder dog and he decided to jump over my head and said, ‘Look Dad, I can fly, said Vorce.
He cornered the bad guy but was lame days later. Vorce took him to the vet, the vet referred him to the center.
Frankly, if I was in trouble, Id want him to rescue me. I have a special place in my heart for Xandor, said Shinas.
After a dip and a treadmill trot, Xandor is given a multi-person massage we should all have days like this. Then officer Vorce puts him thru some paces in a makeshift obstacle course.
Down the hall, one of Xandors K9 colleagues is grappling with a different challenge. His name is Rosco, and hes got a nose for trouble.
When you pass a dumpster, you smell trash. The dog will pass a dumpster and hell smell every individual odor in there. Hell smell what toppings are on that piece of pizza on the top of the trash. Hell smell the dirty diaper, the tennis shoe, said Metro K9 Officer Scott Murray.
Roscoe, a 10-year-old Springer Spaniel, is a superstar drug sniffer, able to ferret out the most secretive hiding places. Like the other K9 officers, Murray lives with his police dogs. He and Officer Vorce spend more time with their canine partners than with their spouses, and they learn to deal with the good and the bad.
For Roscoe, the news is bad. I was petting him on the couch one day and I was scratching the back of his leg and noticed a lump, said Officer Murray.
The lump was cancer lymphoma.
Veterinarian Andrew Vaughan has been overseeing chemotherapy for Roscoe. The trickiest part for a dog like this one is to make sure the treatment isnt worse than the disease. Its important that Roscoe is able to keep on working, not only for the community, but for himself.
So much of their life is spent working, so we try to make sure they dont lose that component of their lifestyle because thats what they love doing. Thats what they live for, said Dr. Vaughan.
Both Roscoe and Xandor are at an age when some departments retire their dogs, especially dogs that have serious health issues. Officer Murray says there was never a question of getting rid of these two. Our department is very supportive of hurt animals. They dont just throw them under the bus, he said.
The Vet Referral Center sees a lot of injured police dogs. Some of the treatments and therapies can be expensive, but the alternative could be more costly. Getting those animals back to work and not having to buy new dogs and train them, its a huge benefit to the taxpayers as well, said Dr. Mason.
Not to mention that its great to have these guys around.
Since this story was taped, Xandor is already back at work and tracking down suspects. Roscoe is still taking it easy but his handler says he could be back on the job very soon. The chemotherapy hasnt affected his ability to sniff out crime.

I am an animal lover and have been since I was a child. Today I own a couple of dogs as well as four cats. As other pet owners would know you take on a huge responsibility when you decide that you want to own a domestic animal. Not only do you have to feed them good nutritious food you also need to provide them with regular exercise so that you can ensure that they remain healthy and free of ailments.
I am quite astonished that many pet owners ignore the opportunity to buy pet health insurance for cats. Statistics show that people who own dogs as well as cats are more inclined to insure their dog rather than their cat. I am not sure as to why they decide this, perhaps it is because they have the belief that because dogs are more active they are more likely to get injuries requiring veterinary treatment, rather than cats who are considered to be more homely and less likely to sustain injuries. In reality cats, even those that remain mostly indoors, are just as likely to require treatment for health problems as dogs.
In some cases it is cats who are more prone to having health related problems than dogs. Cats are inclined to suffer in silence, meaning that although they may have a serious health problem you may not necessarily realize because they dont jump about complaining as is the case with most dogs.
Furthermore, cats are known to have an incredibly high threshold for pain and suffering. It is because of their ability to mask the fact that they have serious health problems that your cat may suffer right before your eyes and you may never even know it. A cat could well be suffering a life-threatening ailment for many years but if you dont take it to the vet for regular checkups the problem may never be discovered.
In the case of pet owners who have more than one cat, if one gets sick it is highly likely to pass on the problem to your other cats resulting in you incurring quite sizable vet fees and ongoing treatment costs. So rather than insure your dog and ignore your cat you should go out and buy pet health insurance for cats as well. When you talk to the average pet owner you get a variety of different responses when you mention something as important as taking your cat for regular veterinary check ups. Often, people will say things like Well, if there is nothing wrong with my cat then I usually dont bother taking them to the vet. This response shows that the cat owner is somewhat irresponsible.
Like humans our pets should be subjected to frequent check-up so as to maintain good health and identify any potential problems. Taking preventative measures for our animals is a much better option than having to source a cure. The cost of preventative animal health is also much cheaper than having to fix up a particular problem. With the peace of mind offered by pet health insurance for cats you will be able to control the cost of providing regular health checks for your much adored pet. Check out the prices for pet health insurance online for all your domestic animals - you will be pleasantly surprised at the small amount you need to pay for peace of mind.

Start by providing your puppy with a "safe place" where he can stay when you are not able to supervise him. A crate works well for this purpose. You can also use a small, unused room in your home. Barricade the doorway with a baby gate. Don't use a closed door to keep your puppy in his "safe place".
Your puppy will be spending a lot of time in this "safe place" so make certain it is large enough for him to be able to stand up, turn around and curl up to sleep. He needs to be comfortable here.
In the early stages of the housebreaking process, your puppy will need to be placed in the "safe place" when you cannot directly watch and supervise him. This is so that you can see what he is doing and can interrupt him and take him outside if you see him beginning to urinate or defecate in the house.
You will need to make a point of taking your puppy outside very often in the beginning. Choose an area in your yard where you prefer your puppy to get used to urinating and defecating. Take your puppy to this spot often and always make certain you have your puppy's favorite treats with you.
When you see your puppy relieve himself outside, give a treat immediately. The idea is to teach your puppy that he will get rewarded for this behavior. So be consistent in the beginning and always be generous with the treats to start.
You can also start teaching your puppy to urinate or defecate on your command by saying something like "go pee, Spot" or "potty now". Soon your puppy will begin to associate the act of urinating and defecating with receiving treats and will also soon realize that when you say "potty now", you wish him to perform his duties, after which he will receive a treat.

About 90% of American pet puppies live indoors with their owners. If you are thinking of having your dog live inside with you and your family, you have to go through the process of housebreaking them. Many pet owners are daunted by the responsibility of potty training a puppy. But its really not that hard to accomplish, it doesnt need to be messy, and you dont have to struggle with your pet when housebreaking him. You have to keep in mind though that this is a training issue and you have to put in a little more than just casual effort. You will need time, a little more involvement, as well as some training tools such as puppy training pads.
The Puppy Rules
For dogs and puppy owners, there are two major rules that you should stick to when training your pups. First and most importantly, dont punish your pup for something you did not catch him do! And second, praise your puppy for the things he did do right. Dont let training lead to situations where your only action is saying when you catch your pet doing something wrong. Let them know through praises and rewards when they do something right.
House Training/Breaking Puppies
Many methods exist for housebreaking your puppy. When starting indoors, encourage your pup to use puppy training pads or papers to go to the bathroom on. These pads are treated with chemicals that make puppies want to use them to do their business. The moment you observe them beginning the pre-elimination routine of pacing and sniffing at the floor, lift up the puppy and quietly relocate them to the paper or puppy training pads, and then offer them a reward for appropriately going to the bathroom.
When the new dog is comfortable with the papers or puppy training pads, they can then be put near the door or even outside. The transition is accomplished by focusing their toilet habits in a specific in the home to an outside place. In the very near future you will have no need for papers or training pads indoors.
The biggest issue with this method of puppy potty training is that is requires more time to get the puppy to go indoors. When house training puppies, other widely used techniques might work; you could, for example, use puppy crate training or cages, always accompanied by the owners close supervision.
When using a cage or crate to housebreak your puppy, realize that puppies cant go for more than about seven to eight hours without using the bathroom. Crate training usually works because dogs do not like to mess their sleeping places, then have to lie in it. It is not a good idea to crate a puppy for long periods of time.
The use of crates/cages and papers/puppy pads is not required if you have constant supervision. In this case, the owners elect to be with their puppies for as much time as necessary. For people who are retired, work from home, or pet owners that have the spare time to be with their puppy, this is the ideal situation. Pet owners can normally usher their dog outside as soon as the pre-potty signs are noticed with this technique. You need to keep a constant eye on your puppy to prevent any accidents or slip-ups.
To summarize, housebreaking and training your puppy should be included along with teaching them the basic commands like and . However, toilet training and housebreaking your puppy will be the messiest types of training, and generally have more headaches than other sorts of puppy training. Have faith.

Talk to your veterinarian and ask her to show you these areas. A vet should examine your dog once a year to check for swollen lymph glands, dont rely on your own judgement exclusively. But it doesnt hurt to check once in awhile to see if you notice anything unusual. If you do find something suspicious, make an appointment with your vet to get it checked out.
If the disease becomes more advanced or originates internally, there can be other symptoms depending on where it has spread. These include vomiting, weight loss, loss of appetite, lethargy, shortness of breath (indicating chest involvement), or lumps in the skin or mouth.
What dogs are most likely to get lymphoma? It seems that age is a factor. Older dogs aged 7 or more years are more likely to get the disease. There does not appear to be any breed disposition.
If left untreated, lymphoma can be fatal within weeks. With treatment, which may involve chemotherapy and surgery, life can be extended anywhere between months and a year.
Osteosarcoma
Osteosarcoma is a type of cancer in the bones. Usually, these growths are found in the limbs which leads to lameness and a reluctance to walk or exercise being among the chief symptoms. Swelling and pain in the bones may result, and in advanced cases, the dog may suddenly break a leg.
This is a very dangerous cancer, and early detection is essential. Unfortunately in 9 out of 10 cases the disease may spread to the lungs and less than half the dogs diagnosed with this condition survive more than a year.
Breast Cancer
If a female dog has not been spayed, breast cancer is the most likely type of cancer she can get. By spaying the dog, the risk can essentially be eliminated. The earlier the dog is spayed, the more her protection-dogs spayed before their first heat have virtually no risk of getting breast cancer.
While breast cancer is common, it is very treatable if detected early. However it is a fast growing cancer that spreads rapidly.
Mast Cell Tumors
Mast cell tumors are smooth or sometimes bumpy and sometimes ulcerated skin growths. They can occur singly or in groups. These tend to occur in older dogs aged 7+ years. If detected early, treatment is usually successful. However mast cell tumors can spread throughout the body to the lymph nodes, liver, and even the bone marrow.
Hemangiosarcoma
This is an unusual type of cancer that is common in dogs which arises from the blood vessels. The tumor itself is formed of blood vessels and it may rupture, leading to internal bleeding and signs of anemia. These types of tumors usually arise in the liver, heart, spleen, in the bones, and on the skin.
The prognosis depends where the tumor originated. If the tumor is in the skin, the dog has a good chance of survival. Dogs with internally generated hemangiosarcomas have a less than favorable outlook. Less than half of them will survive more than six months.
This type of cancer is commonly found in Golden Retrievers, German Shepherds, and some types of Terriers. They also tend to occur in older dogs.
Testicular and Prostate Cancer
These male cancers, which are often common in humans as well, occur in male dogs which have not been neutered. A male dog that had undescended testicles is at the greatest risk of coming down with testicular cancer. The good news is that by neutering a male dog, the risk of testicular cancer is completely eliminated, and the risk of prostate cancer is dramatically reduced. If you are not going to breed your dog you should have him neutered.
Conclusion
The best defenses when it comes to cancer of dogs are early detection, and spaying or neutering your dog if youre not going to breed. Be sure to have your dog see your veterinarian on an annual basis to give your dog a leg up on detection.

Serenity resides inside a fuzzy mauvy box with door
This week the Assistant editor of center of writing provided me a carrel close to the central entry. There are three carrels in a line: my director, mines in the medium, and another towards the line which I think is empty. When I arrived the next day, I immediately noted that its assistance had made a nice label with my name and Webmaster of title for the door. Very soft need I to take a photograph on this side of the door too. Without counting that to be beside the UWC, we are also inside what was the old center of private lessons and study, inside the 3rd stage, the larger space of building of library, inside the campus of UTEP, the limits of town of El Paso. Basically, I am in the center of a very large matryoshka or a Russian headstock of fitment. Speaking with another student about PhD which is now a candidate (it also has a carrel), I said that I was not going to put anything on the walls. But since then, I reconsidered because there are four walls. I could not put things on the sides and nothing on the face wall I. If so, I think that I will ressusciterai my old post cube of my days of corporation of bee of workman. All supposed and specifically selected to scoff a culture at dull company of beginner. There is a fury against the machine circa the poster 1999-2000 based on an old Marxist design of workman, a poster of Caslon of emigrant not (police force the official one of the company was Caslon), and some more things which could clarify the place. I need also my lamp of halogen; the fluorescent whirr above my head give me an headache and the light is very weak. Yesterday, while I emerged from this space of womblike, I decompressed. I believe that each one comes at the beginning outside resembling a mole, having a cast and stretching themselves, reacting and acclimatizing to larger external space in a space. In a general way, I tested a feeling trancelike as if I worked inside a cave; but a square cave with the scrambled walls mauvy-bronzings, a door with a small window, a little free space, and a little more light than one would receive probably the interior a cave of rock. It is a serene place, when I am inside my cave with my rougeoyer of screen and pink ear-phones of Skullcandy which help to make conceal the voices apart from these walls. However, there could is an additional advantage. I could just relearn the precalculation and the algebra because there is a whiteboard side opposite of the face of wall I. the daily young men joins together for deconstruct various equations and theorems. They hammer on the council with theirs dryness-erase markers, laughing. They discuss their numbers and signs and symbols, while resting with a large table.
