The New Jersey Supreme Court has designated mounting litigation over the Johnson Johnson antibiotic Levaquin as a mass tort and has assigned it to an Atlantic County, N.J., judge. The suits charge that the drug, which is prescribed for bacterial infections of the lungs, urinary tract and skin, has caused Achilles' tendon ruptures and other damage.
The plaintiffs law firm that sought mass-tort status, Douglas London of New York, maintains that the litigation will likely involve thousands of cases with the same defendants, similar complex issues of law and fact, and plaintiffs with a high degree of commonality in their injuries and damages.
The firm, which has filed six Levaquin suits in New Jersey, also said Atlantic County is appropriate because its docket is less crowded than those in Bergen or Middlesex counties, the other venues hearing mass-tort cases.

I am a native of New Orleans and lived there my tentire life until Katrina. I worked in the city's tourism industry for 25 years. Let us get on with the medical complex. However, we should keep the old Charity building.
It can and should be used for administrative purposes and doctor's offices. It could have a practical use.
The building was built in 1938 and designed by the architectural firm of Seiforth and Dreyfous, who also did the Capitol in Baton Rouge. It is a part of history.
This building would be too expensive to reproduce today. When will we learn to stop destroying our historic past?
As a preservationist, I want to save the Charity Hospital building. Put it to a different use.

Wellness is a great concept. It brings happiness into health and encourages a truly holistic approach to life. Wikipedia defines wellness as a healthy balance of the mind-body and spirit that results in an central feeling of well-being. It sounds like exactly what every one is looking for. But when you begin to talk about corporate wellness, or worksite wellness, all life goes out of the concept. Total solutions, disease management and health assessment do not inspire visions of enjoying life and living it to the full. They begin from the assumption that sickness is here to stay and needs to be discovered, managed and controlled but can never be healed. The wellness industry is growing phenomenally fast. Wellness guru, Paul Zane Pilzer, has labeled it the next trillion dollar industry. But wellness has two different faces. On the one hand there are the small organizations - people working from home or in small centers selling all kinds of wellness products and services at a speed of growth that is escalating rapidly. On the other hand corporate wellness is also exploding but in a very different direction. The baby boomers who are driving the popular wellness revolution have been described as the first generation to refuse to accept the inevitability of death. They are actively looking for ways to prevent aging, stay healthy into old age and enjoy themselves more than ever before after retirement. This is a radical departure from current notions of old age, which are often dominated by pictures of sickness, frailty and suffering. The organizations have been largely forced to take on wellness. This is partly through legislative pressure, with a myriad of countries introducing laws to make organizations liable for stress-related sickness in their employees. It is also monetarily motivated, as research has repeatedly shown the enormous costs of absenteeism (and increasingly of presenteeism as well). Whereas the baby boomers are actively looking for new solutions and new lifestyles the organizations are struggling to organize largely traditional and mainstream health systems, such as doctors, nurses, insurance and screening systems. The issue is that the traditional health system does not have solutions for the problems that people are handling. Nobody ever went to see a doctor to get happy, because a doctor doesnt have any clue how to make people happy. And a myriad of stress-related health problems are described as chronic diseases, which means that they last for a very long time - or perhaps for the rest of your life - because there is no medical cure. Counseling is a common offering in organizations for emotional problems, but whilst it may offer a useful pressure valve it is not a powerful treatment for stress, unhappiness or depression. Imagine walking into a business where the employees are happy, healthy, full of inspiration, fit, love working, have meaningful family lives, active social lives, and enjoyable relationships at work and in their area. That kind of business would be a pleasure to work in and bound to be successful because people would be working to their optimum capacity. So can we create a system of true wellness that will serve the development of the organizations and their employees and will pay for itself because of the benefits that both sides will gain? First of all we have to face the fact that we cant place all the responsibility into the hands of the current health system. Absenteeism, stress, depression, the very roots of the wellness revolution, have not been solved by the current system. If they had been we wouldnt have this revolution, we would all be much more well. So we need to look elsewhere for solutions. We also cannot rely on makeshift feel-great wellness offerings, such as the on-Site massage group which visits the office once a month or the wellness day that raises awareness for a modest amount of while but leaves most people unaffected. They are simple to organize but have little or no real effect on employee wellness. Corporation needs are different than individual needs and many of the new small wellness organizations that are springing up simply dont have the capacity to serve the corporate market. However it is in the best interest of both organizations and employees to discover and cultivate systems of wellbeing and health that really work - that benefit people to be happy, handle stress, love working, and to have sufficient energy to go home at the end of the day and enjoy their family and social life. So far the corporate world has hijacked the concept of wellness and turned it into a modern version of occupational health. It is time to raise the vision and find out how to make truly healthy, happy workplaces where people thrive.

Cyril (originally Constantine) and Methodius were brothers, from a noble family in Thessalonika, a district in northeastern Greece. Constantine was the younger, born in about 827, and his brother Methodius in about 825. They both entered the priesthood. Constantine undertook a mission to the Arabs, and then became a professor of philosophy at the imperial school in Constantinople and librarian at the cathedral of Santa Sophia. Methodius became governor of a district that had been settled by Slavs. Both brothers then retired to monastic life. In about 861, the Emperor Michel III sent them to work with the Khazars northeast of the Black Sea in the Dnieper-Volga region of what was later Russia. They learned the Khazar language and made many converts, and discovered what were believed to be relics of Clement, an early Bishop of Rome.
In about 863, Prince Rotislav, the ruler of Great Moravia (an area including much of what was later Czecko-Slovakia), asked the emperor for missionaries, specifying that he wanted someone who would teach his people in their own language (he had western missionaries, but they used only Latin). The emperor and the Patriarch Photius sent Methodius and his brother Constantine, who translated the Liturgy and much of the Scriptures into Slavonic.
Since Slavonic had no written form, they invented an alphabet for it, the Glagolitic alphabet, which gave rise to the Cyrillic alphabet (named for Constantine aka Cyril), which is used to write Russian and (with modifications) several related languages today. They used the Greek alphabet as their basis, writing a letter in two forms when two similar sounds in Slavonic each needed a letter (hence, in modern Russian, we have "plain a" written "A" and "fancy a" written like a backward "R" representing the sounds of hard and soft (or unpalatalized and palatalized) a, represented approximately in English by "ah" and "yah"). When no Greek letter was close, then they borrowed from Hebrew (the letter TZADDI for the sound "ts" as in "tsar", and the letter SHIN for the sound "sh", and a variant on it for the sound "shch" as in "Khrushchev", and so on). The resulting alphabet had 43 letters. It has since undergone development, chiefly simplification and the omission of letters. Thus, the modern Russian alphabet has only 32 letters. The Cyrillic alphabet with minor variations is used today for Russian, Ukrainian, and other languages of the former USSR, and also for Bulgarian and Serbian and formerly for Rumanian. (Serbs and Croats both speak Serbo-Croatian, but the Serbs, who are traditionally East Orthodox, write it with the Cyrillic alphabet, while the Croats, who are traditionally Roman Catholic, write it with the Latin alphabet. Before the first World War, there were many muslims (regarded as Turks) living in Greece, and many Christians (regarded as Greeks) living in western Turkey. Each group spoke the language of the country in which it lived, but the Greek-speaking Turks in Greece wrote Greek using the Arabic script that was then standard for writing Turkish, and the Turkish-speaking Greeks in Turkey wrote Turkish in the Greek alphabet. For some reason, the alphabet matters to rival religious groups.)
Thus the brothers were the first to produce written material in the Slavic languages, and are regarded as the founders of Slavic literature.
The brothers encountered missionaries from Germany, representing the western or Latin branch of the Church, and more particularly representing the Holy Roman Empire as founded by Charlemagne, and committed to linguistic, and cultural uniformity. They insisted on the use of the Latin liturgy, and they regarded Moravia and the Slavic peoples as their rightful mission field. When friction developed, the brothers, unwilling to be a cause of dissension among Christians, went south toward Venice, and then from Venice to Rome to see the Pope, hoping to reach an agreement that would avoid quarreling between missionaries in the field. They brought with them the above-mentioned relics of Clement, third bishop of Rome after the Apostles (see 23 November). They arrived in Rome in 868 and were received with honor. Constantine entered a monastery there, taking the name Cyril, by which he is now remembered. However, he died only a few weeks thereafter. He is buried in Rome in the Church of San Clemente.
The Pope (Adrian II) gave Methodius the title of Archbishop of Sirmium (now Sremska Mitrovica in Yugoslavia) and sent him back in 869, with jurisdiction over all of Moravia and Pannonia, and authorization to use the Slavonic Liturgy. Soon, however, Prince Rotislav, who had originally invited the brothers to Moravia, died, and his successor did not support Methodius. In 870 the Frankish king Louis and his bishops deposed Methodius at a synod at Ratisbon, and imprisoned him for a little over two years. The pope (John VIII) secured his release, but told him not to use the Slavonic Liturgy any more. In 878 he was summoned to Rome on charges of heresy and using Slavonic. This time Pope John was convinced by his arguments and sent him back cleared of all charges, and with permission to use Slavonic. He died 6 April 885 in Velehrad, the old capitol of Moravia. The Carolingian bishop who succeeded him, Wiching, suppressed the Slavonic Liturgy and forced the followers of Methodius into exile. Many found refuge with King Boris of Bulgaria (852-889), under whom they reorganized a Slavic-speaking Church. Meanwhile, Pope John's successors adopted a Latin-only policy which lasted for centuries.
Today Cyril and Methodius are honored by Eastern and Western Christians alike, and the importance of their work in preaching and worshipping in the language of the people is recognized on all sides.
Propers for Cyril and Methodius - Apostles to the Slavs
The Collect.
ALMIGHTY and everlasting God, we thank thee for thy servants Cyril and Methodius, whom thou didst call to preach The Gospel to the Slavic People. Raise up, we pray thee, in this and every land, heralds and evangelists of thy kingdom, that thy Church may make known the unsearchable riches of Christ, and may increase with the increase of God; through the same thy Son Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
The Epistle - Acts 1:1-9.
THE former treatise have I made, O Theophilus, of all that Jesus began both to do and teach, until the day in which he was taken up, after that he through the Holy Ghost had given commandments unto the apostles whom he had chosen: to whom also he shewed himself alive after his passion by many infallible proofs, being seen of them forty days, and speaking of the things pertaining to the kingdom of God: and, being assembled together with them, commanded them that they should not depart from Jerusalem, but wait for the promise of the Father, which, saith he, ye have heard of me. For John truly baptized with water; but ye shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost not many days hence. When they therefore were come together, they asked of him, saying, Lord, wilt thou at this time restore again the kingdom to Israel? And he said unto them, It is not for you to know the times or the seasons, which the Father hath put in his own power. But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth. And when he had spoken these things. while they beheld, he was taken up; and a cloud received him out of their sight.
The Gospel - St. Luke 10:1-9.
AFTER these things the Lord appointed other seventy also, and sent them two and two before his face into every city and place, whither he himself would come. Therefore said he unto them, The harvest truly is great, but the labourers are few: pray ye therefore the Lord of the harvest, that he would send forth labourers into his harvest. Go your ways: behold, I send you forth as lambs among wolves. Carry neither purse, nor pack, nor shoes: and salute no man by the way. And into whatsoever house ye enter, first say, Peace be to this house. And if the son of peace be there, your peace shall rest upon it: if not, it shall turn to you again. And in the same house remain, eating and drinking such things as they give: for the labourer is worthy of his hire. Go not from house to house. And into whatsoever city ye enter, and they receive you, eat such things as are set before you: and heal the sick that are therein, and say unto them, The kingdom of God is come nigh unto you.

Ahhthe sweet, sweet fragrance of freedom (or is that the Beijing smog?). Im at the airport now, and it appears that my saga is coming to a happy ending. Last night I went out and celebrated my new-found freedom with some new-found friends here in Beijing from my initial (but brief) stay in here Beijing. This morning, as I walked through the breakfast buffet at the Westin, I couldnt help but smile to myself as I picked up food. They were playing that song (I think thats what its called), didnt really pay attention to the lyrics, but the song, combined with my mood, made it all feel like I was at the end of a movie, and the credits were just about to roll. But as I enjoyed my five star hotel breakfast, I couldnt help but think of some of the staff at Hotel Quarantine, and how they are still going to be there for at least another month. They themselves dont even really know when theyre done. And that kinda sucks. If you at least have an end, there is hope, but their stay is indefinite until further notice. And while the Westin staff is unbelievable, I have to say that the staff at the Yanxiang Hotel were also superb, and made a crappy situation much more tolerable. Amazing in light of their own circumstances. So, if you or someone else you know is headed to Hotel Quarantine, remember to be extra nice to the awesome staff there, and give them a little extra room too.
Finally, I cant help but think that this could have all been avoided if they just scanned us before we got on the plane instead of after. If they found someone with a temperature, just send em home. That way they dont have to be quarantined halfway across the world, and none of us would need to ever be quarantined. Seems like that would save everyone involved a ton of time and money. But nobodys asked for my advice, and the cab driver on the way over didnt seem to care too much about what I was saying either.
Well, I will continue to post on this blog, but it will likely go back to what I originally intended it to be about Web x.0, product management, and other random musings that come into my head. Its been fun people (no it hasnt), but time for this geek to get on a plane and get back home.

Today people are realising the importance of detoxifying their bodies. Detoxification is the way to rid the body of toxins. There are several natural and medical aided ways to detoxify yourself and it is advisable that you study all procedures well before deciding on a way to detoxify your body.
How do I know if I need to Detox?
Is your body feeling tired and fatigued and mentally confused, even though you had a relaxing day?
Are you having skin problems, bags under the eyes or a distended stomach even though the rest of the body is thin?
Are you irritable and do you have irregular menstrual cycles and unexplained allergies?
If your answer is yes to even one of the above stated questions, then you need a DETOX programme.
How does it work?
Detoxifying your body helps restore balance and regeneration power to your body. Do you know that if you follow a healthy, fresh food diet and don't smoke or drink alcohol your body has the tendency to get rid of the toxins by its own cleansing process? But with today's lifestyle, even if you breathe in you are most probably taking in toxins because of the pollution. Detoxifying aids your body cleansing in the following ways:
Fasting helps give a rest to over worked organs. A rest period helps your body's natural cleansing system strengthen.
Detoxifying helps improve the overall blood circulation in the body.
Detoxification methods stimulate the liver, kidney, skin, intestines, lymph, lungs and colon to rid the body of harmful toxins
You give a new lease of life to the body with healthy nutrients and exercise.
Simple Ways to Detoxify the Body:
NOTE: It is advisable that before undertaking any medical procedure that you first consult with your doctor and only then go ahead. Detoxifying procedures are not advisable for young children, pregnant women or people with degenerative illnesses like cancer or tuberculosis.
First and foremost you will have to quit or at least reduce your daily smoking and reduce your coffee and sugar intake. Coffee, sugar and tobacco are notorious for giving you a momentary "high" followed by a "crash or low", which makes you crave coffee and cigarettes again. This dangerous cycle only increase the toxicant build up in your system, which only increases the risk of diseases like cancer and heart failure.
Exercise - It is the best way to rid your body of toxins. Sweat them out. They say even a 15 minute walk every day can help your body, so why not give yourself that extra boost with a minimum one hour workout every day? Yoga, martial arts and skipping are all recommended exercises.
Water - The one drink you are advised to have as much of as you want. You should drink at least eight to ten glasses of water every day. A good way to start your day is to drink at least two glasses of warm water before you have breakfast; this not only helps in ridding the toxins but also aids weight loss.
Eat a diet rich in fibre, wheat and brown bread, fresh fruits and juices and fresh vegetables. Cabbage, beetroot, radishes, broccoli, seaweed, spirulina, chlorella and artichokes are the best for detoxifying the body.
Breathe deeply as the increased intake of oxygen helps the body rejuvenate.
Take herbs like dandelion root and milk thistle to help and soothe the liver. Vitamin C, which is also found in lemons, is another aid to the liver.
Use a sauna facility if possible, as this helps the body sweat the toxins out.
Take regular massages and visit a Spa, not only to rid the toxins but also to pamper yourself.
Use a dry brush on the skin to get rid of all the toxins through the skin. You can get special brushes for this process at natural products stores.
